Symptoms
The first sign is often a painless sore where the infection entered, which heals on its own and is easily missed. Weeks later a rash, often on the palms or soles, flu-like symptoms or swollen glands may follow. Some people notice nothing.
Testing
Syphilis is diagnosed with a blood test, which can detect most infections from about 4 to 6 weeks after exposure. Your physician may recommend a repeat test at 3 months. A sore can also be swabbed.
Treatment
Syphilis is treated with antibiotics, usually by injection, arranged by your physician. Follow-up blood tests confirm that treatment has worked. Recent partners should be tested.
